Go!

"And they're off!" as the time honoured phrase exclaims.

As the rain lashed down and the wind howled, Alex and Christo donned their Lycra and contemplated the sanity of galumphing around Wimbledon common.

As they wend their individual ways to the starting pistol for this, the opening event in the Evoking History calendar:  The 3000 metres Cross-Country run.  A deity of sorts, fate, fortuity and happenstance all smiled upon their thinning pates and gifted them a fresh but sun-kissed galumph.  And so it was that with little pomp or circumstance, the number of events was whittled down to 84.

A wise man once said that a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.  Our journey has begun.  3000ish steps have been taken.  How many more will be taken between now and 31st December?  Answers on a postcard!

The next event will be a 5000 metre galumph through altogether less of a morass.  Watch this space, facebook and www.sportstarts.org and indeed twitter.  There will be events to join should you so wish.

On your marks. Get set.

A few hours from now and the first of the 85 will have been done.  We will, indeed, be minus one.  The box marked 3000m Cross Country run from the Modern Pentathlon will be ticked and things will be well and truly underway.

The festive period has been focussed exclusively on festivation and, in the name of equality and fairness, neither of us has achieved anything more swift than a gentle amble.  In preparation for this race Alex has spent a lot of time squelching through mud in Scotland while Christo has been assessing the course from the comfort of an armchair and through the bottom of a large wine-filled glass.

This was always meant to be a gentle warm up to the insanity that is to follow - thank goodness it is!

Pics and film footage to follow.

If you'd like to join us in any of our endeavours details can be found at www.sportstarts.org

"Time, time, time ... see what's become of me"

The new year approaches and with it 80 Olympic and 5 Paralympic disciplines.

We met the other day and discussed things.

We're good at doing that.

We've written to a growing host of people which seems fitting for the time of year:  They've all been very complimentary and receptive but thus far we're still no closer to our goal.

With Christmas and The Festive Season just around the corner - possibly already here - and D-Day looming ever closer there is still a lot to do.  The good thing is that Sportstarts has a bit of flexibility; on the flip side, Evoking History can't wait.  January 3rd is when it all kicks off.  The 3000m Cross Country ...

Other things that are organised or at least being considered: We've got Tooting Bec Athletics Track for the last weekend in August and there are other things in the side lines.  If anyone knows of anyone who may be able to support any other sports or disciplines, we can be reached at info@sportstarts.org.  The only requirement is that coaches, trainers, experts and the like be recognised by their National Governing Body.

Sportstarts itself will be launching on the 25th August and we hope that whoever wishes to join us will do just that.  There are 400 seats and they all need filling.  If you'd like to take part you can contact us at info@sportstarts.org.  While we are doing our Decathlon+2 you can bring a team and do a team decathlon ...

More to follow ...

What's been happening?

It seems now that the initial concept behind Evoking History was destined to be the foetal stages of something altogether grander and so it is we are pleased to introduce you, whoever you may be, to sportstarts.

Details are still being thrashed out and there's a whole lot of person to meet before things are finalised but suffice to say the wheels are in motion and things are progressing apace.

Evoking History has evolved from being a one off to being the beginnings of something bigger and, dare I say it better.  It is no longer the end but the means to said greater things.

More will follow as soon as it can but stay tuned for everything that that will entail.

Once upon a November evening ...

A spark glinted in his eye as a thought cavorted with wanton abandon through his brain.  It might have been a thought, it might have been the product of a bottle of the New World's finest grape-based product.
"I know," he said. "Why don't we see if, during the course of 2012, we can't do every single one of the Olympic events?"
The spark scuttled from one's eye to the other's.
Everything else was lost.
An idea had been born and they were now its bearers.
"Even the high dive?"
"Even the high dive!"
